ACDC Express 2020 SWITCH Design Competition

In partnership with StudioMIC, Local ZA Design and ACDC Dynamics.

“Without good design, humankind has nothing to desire.” ~ Michele Grech-Cumbo.

Hosted annually, the SWITCH Design Competition is an ACDC Express initiative that  encourages South African designers to solve an everyday issue faced by countless South  Africans. In 2020, we tackled the issue of having to study by candlelight. Every South  African has the right to an education, but should have the right to safety as well. Entrants  were required to design an innovative light that utilises solar power and would improve the  lives of struggling South Africans.

This year, we called on all designers to create an innovative solar solution. The SWITCH  Design Competition allows ACDC Express and their partners to contribute to our country  and local communities. ACDC Express provides a platform for local designers to showcase  their talents and potentially establish a name for themselves. SWITCH seeks to encourage  designers from all walks of life to engage their talents in the conceptual design of a  practical product, focussing on uniqueness and aesthetic appeal.

THE BRIEF

Studying by candlelight.

Studying by candlelight is a potential fire hazard, providing insufficient light for studying/reading purposes.

We requested a creative solar light design that makes use of ACDC  Express products. The light was to be capable of producing enough illumination for a  student to study by at night, while complying with the competition design specifications.  The design had to be multi-functional, portable, and (if possible) modular.

The design could not exceed 300 mm H x 300 mm W x 300 mm D.

Designers had to keep in mind that the design, if manufactured, would be 3D  printed. All designs had to be rendered in white plastic.
